The French government said on Wednesday that it was suspending access to the online retailer Shein until the company proved that its content complied with French laws, after the discovery this week of child pornography sex dolls posted for sale on its site drew nationwide furor.

The crackdown, ordered by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, added to a ballooning controversy over Shein in France. The company on Wednesday opened a store in Paris, its first brick-and-mortar location in the world, drawing throngs of protesters and shoppers alike to a chaotic scene.

More than 200 police officers surrounded BHV Marais, a department store where Shein had taken over the top floor, and sought to keep order as crowds lined up to get in. Hundreds of protesters massed across the street behind barricades, shouting “Shame on you!” to those waiting in line, while passing cyclists hurled insults.

Andreia Chavent, a worker at BHV Marais, said many employees were upset by what they viewed as the incursion into France of a low-cost Chinese competitor that used cheap labor and violated environmental standards to make its clothes.

The French government had threatened on Monday to bar Shein from selling its products online in the country and referred the company to the Paris prosecutor after an investigation found that sex dolls “resembling children” were being sold on the company’s platform in France. The dolls, which were the size of little girls, were of a “child pornography nature,” the country’s consumer fraud agency said.
